Released in 2010, Äio represents a significant production leap for Metsatöll, marking their debut on the Spinefarm Records label. While earlier works leaned more heavily into a raw thrash aesthetic, Äio introduces a more sophisticated, layered sound that incorporates the Estonian National Male Choir (RAM) on several tracks, adding a cinematic, epic scale to their 'wolf-metal' identity. The album's title refers to a spirit of sleep or death in Estonian mythology, a theme that permeates the record's more brooding passages. Musically, the album is defined by the multi-instrumental prowess of Lauri 'Varulven' Õunapuu, whose use of the torupill, kannel, and various flutes provides the melodic backbone that would traditionally be reserved for lead guitars.
