Following a period of intense rock songwriting, Frusciante sought to 'clear his head' by engaging with music that evolves gradually. Influenced by musique concrète pioneers like Bernard Parmegiani and modern drone artists like Oren Ambarchi, the album was created using Elektron Monomachine and Analog Four synthesizers. Each track was recorded live in a single take with no overdubs, emphasizing the performative aspect of electronic patching. This vinyl version is notably shorter than its digital/CD counterpart because certain low-frequency sounds on the longer version were technically impossible to press onto vinyl without compromising the physical medium.
