Hypermagic Mountain

Released in 2005, Hypermagic Mountain is widely considered the magnum opus of the Providence, RI duo Lightning Bolt. Recorded directly to a 2-track DAT master tape by Dave Auchenbach, the album preserves the raw, uncompressed energy of the band's legendary floor shows. While their previous effort, Wonderful Rainbow, established their cult status, Hypermagic Mountain refined their 'prog-noise' aesthetic with longer compositions and more complex rhythmic interplay. The album is notable for its use of extreme distortion and vocal processing, with Brian Chippendale famously singing through a telephone mask to achieve a lo-fi, telephonic grit. Lyrically, the album takes a sharper turn toward social and political commentary, most notably on the track 'Dead Cowboy', which serves as a blistering critique of the Iraq War. Critics from Pitchfork and Stylus Magazine praised the album for its 'well-oiled' execution and maturity, cementing Lightning Bolt as the premier architects of modern noise rock.
