Hearts That Strain marks Jake Bugg’s fourth studio outing and a significant stylistic pivot toward Americana and 1970s soft rock. Following the experimental and somewhat polarizing 'On My One', Bugg traveled to Nashville to work with the Memphis Boys, the session group famous for their work on 'Dusty in Memphis' and Elvis Presley’s late-60s hits. This collaboration resulted in his most polished and musically sophisticated record to date. The album eschews the gritty, working-class indie-folk of his Nottingham roots for a breezy, Southern-influenced sound characterized by acoustic guitars, piano, and subtle brass.
