Have One on Me

Released in 2010 as a triple-LP box set, Have One on Me represents a significant stylistic pivot for Joanna Newsom. Following the hyper-dense, orchestral complexity of Ys, this album embraces a more grounded, Americana-inflected sound. It is the first record since her debut to feature piano as a primary instrument, and it introduces a more diverse instrumental palette including drums, tambura, and brass. The recording is notable for Newsom's changed vocal timbre, which moved into a lower, smoother register. Arranged by Ryan Francesconi and mixed by Jim O'Rourke and Noah Georgeson, the album balances sparse, solo performances with sprawling, multi-movement epics like the title track. Lyrically, it moves away from the archaic, high-fantasy imagery of her past toward a more direct, though still highly literary, exploration of a crumbling relationship and the geography of the American West. It remains one of the most ambitious and critically lauded folk releases of the 21st century.
