Half Way Home

Released in 2012 on the Bathetic label, Half Way Home serves as Angel Olsen's transition from the lo-fi, home-recorded aesthetics of her 'Strange Cacti' EP into a more defined, though still minimalist, studio presence. Produced by Ben Boye, the album highlights Olsen's unique vocal technique - a blend of 1930s-era country yodeling, 1950s pop vibrato, and contemporary indie-folk stoicism. Critics, notably from AllMusic and Pitchfork, lauded the album for its emotional transparency and Olsen's ability to command attention with very little accompaniment. While she would later move toward indie rock and art-pop with 'Burn Your Fire for No Witness' and 'My Woman', Half Way Home remains her most purely 'folk' statement. It is a foundational text for the 2010s singer-songwriter revival, showcasing a songwriter more interested in the texture of a feeling than the structure of a radio hit.
