Released in 2022 after a nearly decade-long hiatus, For the Sake of Bethel Woods marks the triumphant return of Midlake. Following the departure of original frontman Tim Smith years prior, this album solidifies Eric Pulido's leadership while reconnecting with the band's signature '70s-influenced folk-rock sound. The album's title and concept were inspired by a dream keyboardist Jesse Chandler had about his late father at the original Woodstock site, lending the record a poignant, multi-generational emotional weight. Sonically, it is more expansive than its predecessor, Antiphon, reintroducing the prominent flute and lush vocal stacks that defined their landmark work, The Trials of Van Occupanther. Produced by John Congleton, the record balances a polished studio sheen with the band's inherent organic, earthy textures. It stands as a testament to the band's resilience and their ability to evolve while remaining the definitive architects of modern pastoral psych-folk.
