Released in 1995, 'For Lovers Only' serves as a spiritual successor to the group's 1967 standards album 'The Temptations in a Mellow Mood'. Produced by Richard Perry, who was known for his work with artists like Rod Stewart and Pointer Sisters, the album arrived during a transitional and poignant period for the group. It features the final recordings of founding bass singer Melvin Franklin, whose health was failing during the sessions; he passed away shortly before the album's release. Due to his illness, Ray Davis of Parliament-Funkadelic stepped in to provide bass vocals on several tracks. The album also marks the final appearance of lead singer Ali-Ollie Woodson. Critically, it was hailed as one of their strongest late-career efforts, successfully blending the 'Adult Contemporary' R&B sound of the 90s with the timelessness of the Great American Songbook. The inclusion of tracks like 'Some Enchanted Evening' and 'At Last' allowed the group to showcase their legendary five-part harmonies in a sophisticated, orchestral context.
