Figure Number Five

Released in 2003, Figure Number Five represents Soilwork's most significant shift toward a commercial, alternative metal sound. Following the success of Natural Born Chaos, the band further integrated synthesizers and clean vocals, a move that polarized long-time fans of their earlier, more aggressive work like Steel Bath Suicide. This album is notable for being keyboardist Sven Karlsson's first major contribution to the songwriting process, which explains the increased presence of electronic textures and melodic layering. Despite its commercial success and the popularity of singles like 'Rejection Role' and 'Light the Torch,' vocalist Björn Strid has since expressed that the album felt rushed and lacked the intensity of its predecessors. Historically, it remains a landmark of the 'Modern Melodic Death Metal' movement, influencing a generation of bands to prioritize melody and production polish over raw extremity.
