Feed Me Weird Things

Released in 1996 on Rephlex Records, Feed Me Weird Things is the debut studio album by Tom Jenkinson, better known as Squarepusher. Recorded between 1994 and 1996 while Jenkinson was an art student, the album was famously curated by Richard D. James (Aphex Twin), who selected the final tracklist from a vast archive of Jenkinson's tapes. The record is widely credited with pioneering the 'drill 'n' bass' subgenre, characterized by its extreme manipulation of breakbeats and high-tempo rhythmic patterns. Unlike many of his peers in the IDM scene, Jenkinson brought a high level of traditional musicianship to the project, specifically through his virtuoso electric bass playing. This fusion of jazz fusion sensibilities with the aggressive aesthetics of jungle and acid techno created a sound that was both technically dazzling and emotionally resonant. The album received significant critical acclaim upon release, with many critics noting its ability to bridge the gap between the dancefloor and the conservatory.
