Fantasy

Released in 1973, Fantasy represents Carole King’s most explicit foray into the 'concept album' or 'song cycle' format. Following the massive success of Tapestry and Rhymes & Reasons, King used this project to explore broader social themes, framing the record with 'Fantasy Beginning' and 'Fantasy End.' Sonically, the album is a departure, incorporating a larger ensemble including a prominent horn section and Latin percussionists, most notably on the hit 'Corazón.' The recording sessions captured a more live, ensemble-driven energy compared to her previous stripped-back affairs. Critics often note that while it didn't reach the commercial heights of Tapestry, it showcased her growth as an arranger and her willingness to engage with the political climate of the era. The album’s seamless transitions and thematic unity make it a precursor to the more experimental singer-songwriter albums of the mid-70s.
