Facing You

Recorded on November 10, 1971, Facing You represents a pivotal moment in both Keith Jarrett's career and the history of the ECM label. While Jarrett was still a member of Miles Davis's septet, he used a day off in Oslo to record these eight solo pieces with producer Manfred Eicher. This session effectively launched the 'ECM sound' - characterized by pristine, spacious recording quality and a focus on European-influenced jazz improvisation. Unlike the entirely spontaneous live concerts that would later define his legacy (such as The Köln Concert), these studio pieces are more structured and thematic, though still heavily improvisational. Critics at the time, including Bob Palmer of Rolling Stone, hailed it as a landmark in solo piano, drawing comparisons to the technical brilliance of Art Tatum while noting Jarrett's unique ability to 'flow' rather than simply 'swing.' The album won the Grand Prix des Festivals at Montreux and remains a foundational text for contemporary solo piano performance.
