Exercises

Released in 1972 as Nazareth's second studio album, Exercises represents the most significant sonic departure in the band's five-decade history. Produced by Roy Thomas Baker (who would later achieve fame with Queen), the album largely abandons the gritty blues-rock of their debut in favor of an acoustic-led, folk-pop aesthetic. This shift was influenced by the prevailing singer-songwriter and folk-rock trends of the era, leading the band to experiment with orchestral strings, complex vocal harmonies, and traditional Scottish themes. While tracks like 'Woke Up This Morning' and 'Called Her Name' retain some of the band's rhythmic bite and slide guitar prowess, the majority of the record is defined by its chamber-folk sensibilities. The album's centerpiece, '1692 (Glen Coe Massacre)', showcases their ability to blend historical narrative with somber, atmospheric arrangements. Though it was not a commercial breakthrough and is often viewed by critics as a 'temporary mistake' in direction, Exercises remains a cult favorite for its unique production and for showcasing a softer, more melodic side of Dan McCafferty's vocal ability before the band pivoted toward the hard rock sound that would define their legacy.
