Echolocations: Canyon

Echolocations: Canyon is the first installment in Andrew Bird's ambitious five-part series of site-specific instrumental recordings. Released in 2015, the album marks a radical departure from his established career as a chamber-pop songwriter. Recorded live in Coyote Gulch, Utah, the project focuses on the acoustic properties of the natural environment. Bird stood in the middle of the canyon, often in water, and played his violin to hear how the sound bounced off the sandstone walls. These reflections were captured using a specialized microphone setup to preserve the three-dimensional quality of the space. The resulting seven tracks are largely improvisational, built around the 'slapback' and decay times of the canyon's natural reverb. Critically, the album was praised for its technical ingenuity and its ability to translate the physical sensation of the American Southwest into a sonic medium.
