Dreams

A haunting, minimalist reimagining of the Fleetwood Mac classic. Carlton trades soft-rock grooves for vast reverb and intimate, breathy piano-pop.

Vanessa Carlton’s take on Dreams is less of a cover and more of a total sonic haunting. While the original Fleetwood Mac version is defined by its steady, mid-tempo groove and Stevie Nicks’ smoky grit, Carlton strips the song down to its skeletal essence. She places her signature piano at the center, but it is no longer the bright, staccato instrument of her early career. Instead, the notes are spaced out, allowing the silence and the massive, cavernous reverb to become instruments in their own right. It sounds like a memory of a song heard through a thick fog.

Moments Worth Listening For
The moment the first piano chord strikes, ringing out with a decay that lasts several seconds longer than expected.
The subtle entry of a muffled, electronic kick drum that grounds the ethereal vocal layers halfway through.
The bridge where Carlton's voice splits into a shimmering choir of whispers, stripping away the original's grit for pure atmosphere.
