Draw the Line

Released in 1977, Draw the Line represents the end of Aerosmith's golden era and the beginning of a period of significant internal turmoil. Recorded at The Cenacle, an abandoned convent in New York, the sessions were famously chaotic due to the band's escalating drug use. Producer Jack Douglas struggled to keep the group focused, resulting in an album that is sonically dense and occasionally fragmented. Despite the apathy reported during its creation, the album produced some of the band's most enduringly gritty material. It marked a departure from the more structured songwriting of Toys in the Attic, leaning into a raw, straight-ahead hard rock sound that some critics at the time labeled as 'malfunctioning' or 'chaotic.' Retrospectively, however, it is celebrated for its 'classy sleaze' and high-energy performances, particularly on the title track and the ambitious 'Kings and Queens.' It stands as the final cohesive statement from the original lineup before their early-80s decline.
