Deep India

Deep India is a collaborative project between Eric Mouquet (the surviving half of the original Deep Forest duo) and Indian santoor player Rahul Sharma. Released in 2013, it represents a more focused geographical exploration than the group's earlier pan-global works. The album is structured as a sonic map, with each track explicitly tied to a specific Indian state or cultural region. Musically, it retains the lush, reverb-heavy 'ethnic electronica' sound that Mouquet pioneered in the 1990s but updates it with 21st-century production techniques, including sharper digital clarity and occasional nods to the 'dubstep' textures popular at the time of its recording. Critical reception noted the album's ability to maintain a respectful dialogue with its source material while providing the high-gloss, transportive experience expected of the Deep Forest brand. It stands as a late-career highlight that successfully modernized the world-fusion genre.
