Deep As the Night

Released in 2017, 'Deep As the Night' serves as a 35th-anniversary milestone for Special EFX, marking their 21st studio outing. It is a significant release as it represents their first collaboration with the Trippin 'N' Rhythm label, reuniting leader Chieli Minucci with executive Jeff Lunt. Following the passing of co-founder George Jinda years prior, Minucci has steered the project toward a sound that honors their GRP-era roots while embracing modern high-fidelity production. The album is characterized by its 'nocturnal' theme, leaning into smoother, more romantic textures than some of their more aggressive fusion-leaning 90s work. It features a high level of musicianship, utilizing Minucci's 'edgy yet driving' guitar style to bridge the gap between traditional smooth jazz and contemporary R&B. Critically, it was seen as a return to form, reinforcing the band's status as a staple of the genre.
