Dawn of Chromatica is a neon-drenched descent into the digital underworld.
Dawn of Chromatica is a neon-drenched descent into the digital underworld. While the original album was a polished tribute to 90s house and classic dance-pop, this remix collection acts as its jagged, glitch-ridden shadow. It feels less like a traditional pop record and more like a curated tour of the most exciting, chaotic corners of the 2021 internet music scene. The sound is relentlessly maximalist, replacing radio-friendly hooks with metallic textures, deconstructed club beats, and vocal processing that pushes Lady Gaga's voice into strange, alien territories.
Dawn of Chromatica, released in September 2021, represents a significant moment in Lady Gaga's career where she fully embraced the hyperpop and deconstructed club movements. Executive produced by BloodPop, the album is a track-by-track reimagining of her 2020 studio album Chromatica. Rather than opting for standard radio remixes, Gaga and BloodPop curated a roster of underground pioneers and rising stars, including Arca, Charli XCX, A. G. Cook, Shygirl, and Lsdxoxo. This choice signaled a deep respect for the experimental electronic communities that have long been influenced by Gaga's theatricality. The project is notable for its sonic diversity, incorporating elements of Brazilian forro, industrial metal, and glitchcore. Critical reception was generally positive, with publications like AllMusic and Clash praising the album's daring nature and Gaga's role as a cultural curator. It successfully bridged the gap between global pop stardom and the avant-garde, debuting at the top of the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart and further solidifying Gaga's legacy as a chameleon of the electronic genre. The inclusion of the long-awaited Haus Labs version of Babylon served as a significant fan-service moment, closing the album on a high-energy, vogue-inspired note.
