Darling Arithmetic

Released in 2015, Darling Arithmetic represents a pivotal moment in Conor O'Brien's career as Villagers. Following the Mercury Prize-nominated {Awayland}, which was characterized by its dense, electronic-inflected art-pop, O'Brien retreated to his home in Malahide, Dublin. There, he took full control of the process, writing, recording, producing, and mixing every track himself. This isolation resulted in a 'radically subdued' sound that critics compared to the classic folk-rock confessionals of the 1970s. The album is notable for its direct lyrical themes, particularly O'Brien's open exploration of his sexuality and the social landscape of Ireland. It was a commercial and critical triumph, reaching number one in Ireland and winning the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for Best Album in 2016.
