Dare

Dare is the third studio album by The Human League, released in 1981, and marks one of the most successful pivots in music history. Following the departure of founding members Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh, Philip Oakey transformed the group from an experimental industrial-electronic outfit into a chart-topping pop powerhouse. Produced by Martin Rushent, the album is famous for its pioneering use of the Linn LM-1 drum machine and the Roland MC-4 Microcomposer, which allowed for a level of rhythmic precision previously unheard in pop. The recording process was famously meticulous, with Rushent and the band spending weeks perfecting the 'human' feel of the programmed sequences. Critically, the album was a revelation, proving that synthesizers could be used to create music that was both intellectually stimulating and commercially dominant. It reached #1 in the UK and spawned the global phenomenon 'Don't You Want Me', a track Oakey famously initially disliked.
