Daisies of the Galaxy

Released in 1999, Daisies of the Galaxy serves as the lighter, more hopeful companion to the harrowing grief of Eels' previous masterpiece, Electro-Shock Blues. While that record processed the death of Mark Oliver Everett's (E) sister and mother, Daisies represents the 'morning after' - a fragile return to the world. Recorded largely in E's basement, the album features a more acoustic, chamber-pop sound influenced by the likes of The Lovin' Spoonful and Burt Bacharach. It is notable for its use of orchestral flourishes, including horns and woodwinds, which provide a lush, almost whimsical contrast to E's gravelly, understated vocals. The album's legacy is cemented by the inclusion of 'Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues,' a track the label insisted on including as a 'hit,' which ironically became one of the band's most recognizable songs despite its placement as a hidden track. Critics at the time, including those at AllMusic and PopMatters, praised the album for its melodic accessibility and its successful pivot from the darkness of its predecessor without losing E's signature lyrical depth.
