Country Mile

Released in 2013, Country Mile represents a maturation of Johnny Flynn's 'theatrical folk' sound. Recorded with his long-time backing band, The Sussex Wit, the album moves away from the more frantic energy of his debut, A Larum, in favor of a patient, walking-pace tempo. The record is heavily influenced by the concept of the 'country mile' - a distance that feels longer than it is because of the journey's nature. Lyrically, Flynn draws on high-literary influences, most notably T.S. Eliot, while maintaining a grounded, rural perspective. The instrumentation is a highlight, featuring Flynn's own multi-instrumental talents on trumpet and harmonium, which provide a unique 'chamber-folk' texture. It was his first significant commercial success in the UK, signaling his transition from a cult favorite to a central figure in the British folk revival.
