Burn

Released in 2021, Burn is a collaborative project between Dead Can Dance co-founder Lisa Gerrard and Irish composer Jules Maxwell, produced by James Chapman (Maps). The album serves as a bridge between Gerrard's neoclassical roots and a more modern, electronic-ambient sensibility. While Gerrard's signature glossolalia remains the focal point, the production by Chapman introduces a rhythmic structure and synth-driven depth that distinguishes it from her more traditional film score work. The tracks were developed from improvisations, giving the album a fluid, organic narrative arc despite its digital foundations. Critically, it represents a late-career peak in Gerrard's ability to evoke the 'sacred' through sound, moving away from the gothic darkness of her early years toward a more luminous, albeit still somber, sonic palette. It is a concise seven-track experience that prioritizes atmosphere and emotional resonance over complex song structures.
