Boingo

A sprawling, dark departure from their neon-lit past. Gritty alternative rock meets cinematic orchestration in a cynical, mid-90s swan song.

This album represents a total shedding of skin. Gone are the frantic horn sections and the jittery, ska-infused energy that defined the band's 1980s output. In its place is something far more skeletal, heavy, and grand. It feels like the musical equivalent of a funhouse being dismantled at midnight: the bright colors are fading, the machinery is grinding, and the shadows are lengthening. It is a record that fully embraces the alternative rock zeitgeist of 1994 while maintaining the eccentric, theatrical DNA of Danny Elfman's songwriting.

Moments Worth Listening For
The explosive, distorted climax of Insanity where the orchestra swells against heavy riffs.
The eerie, stripped-back vulnerability of Can't See (Useless) showcasing Elfman's softer range.
The chaotic, layered interpretation of I Am the Walrus that bridges 60s psych with 90s grit.
