Black Rooster E.P

Released in 2002, the Black Rooster EP served as the definitive introduction to The Kills, establishing the aesthetic blueprint they would refine on their debut LP, Keep on Your Mean Side. Recorded primarily on an 8-track recorder, the EP is characterized by its extreme minimalism and 'VV' and 'Hotel' personas. The tracklist includes a notable cover of Captain Beefheart's 'Dropout Boogie,' which highlights the duo's roots in avant-garde blues and garage rock. Critically, it was seen as a sharp departure from the more polished indie rock of the era, aligning them with the lo-fi aesthetic of the burgeoning garage rock revival but with a darker, more European post-punk edge. The use of a drum machine (often a Roland) instead of a live drummer became their sonic signature, providing a cold, mechanical contrast to the warm, distorted blues guitar and human vocals. This EP remains a cult favorite for its raw, unpolished energy and its role in defining the 'cool' aesthetic of the early 2000s London/US underground crossover.
