Released in late 2009, BiRd-DrOpPiNgS serves as a crucial bridge and companion piece to the debut tUnE-yArDs full-length, BiRd-BrAiNs. Recorded primarily by Merrill Garbus using a handheld digital recorder and shareware mixing software, the EP exemplifies the 'freak folk' and 'art pop' movements of the late 2000s. The sonic signature is defined by the heavy use of vocal looping, where Garbus layers her voice to create rhythmic foundations, melodic counterpoints, and choral swells. The instrumentation is centered on a distorted ukulele, played with a percussive intensity that mimics an electric guitar, and clattering, non-traditional percussion. This EP includes the 'Small Is Beautiful' remix of Hatari, which highlights the project's affinity for global rhythms and experimental structures.
