Released in 2007, Beauty & Crime marked Suzanne Vega's debut for Blue Note Records and her first studio album in six years. Produced by Jimmy Hogarth, the record is a conceptual and emotional tribute to New York City, particularly the Lower East Side. It serves as a reflection on the city's transformation following the September 11 attacks, as well as a personal meditation on the death of her brother, Tim Vega. Sonically, the album moves away from the experimental industrial textures of her 90s work, returning to a refined, chamber-folk sound enriched by brass and string arrangements. Critics praised the album for its lyrical depth and sophisticated production, with many noting it as her most cohesive work since the late 80s.
