Beatus

Released in 1997, Beatus is a significant compilation of Arvo Pärt's choral works performed by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under the direction of Tõnu Kaljuste. The album serves as a comprehensive showcase of Pärt's 'tintinnabuli' technique, a compositional style inspired by the ringing of bells and Gregorian chant. The centerpiece, 'Missa syllabica', demonstrates Pärt's radical reductionism, where the music is governed by the rhythmic structure of the Latin text. 'De profundis' stands out for its inclusion of organ and percussion, providing a darker, more grounded contrast to the ethereal '7 Magnificat-Antiphonen'. Recorded in the Niguliste Church in Tallinn, the album utilizes the natural 7-second reverb of the space as a primary instrument.
