Beach Fossils

Released in May 2010 on Captured Tracks, Beach Fossils' self-titled debut is a foundational text of the Brooklyn lo-fi and 'captured tracks' sound. Entirely written and recorded by Dustin Payseur on a multi-track recorder in his apartment, the album eschews the garage-rock aggression of its contemporaries for a more sophisticated, melodic approach rooted in the jangle-pop of The Feelies and the atmospheric post-punk of early New Order. The record is characterized by its 'clean' guitar aesthetic - using chorus and reverb rather than distortion - and its prominent, melodic basslines which often carry the lead melody. Critically, it was recognized as a standout in the 'surf-gaze' or 'beach-pop' trend of the early 2010s, though it has outlasted many of its peers due to Payseur's sharp songwriting and the album's cohesive, evocative atmosphere.
