B EP

Released in 2004, B EP is the second of three initial EPs that introduced Battles to the world. It represents the band's most experimental and abrasive phase, predating the more melodic and vocal-heavy direction of their debut full-length, Mirrored. The lineup features the 'supergroup' formation of Ian Williams (Don Caballero), Tyondai Braxton, Dave Konopka, and John Stanier (Helmet). Sonically, the EP is defined by Stanier's legendary drumming, which utilizes a high-mounted crash cymbal and a relentless, high-velocity style that provides the backbone for the complex guitar and synth loops. Tracks like 'SZ2' and the epic 'BTTLS' showcase the band's ability to sustain tension over long durations, using subtle shifts in repetition to create a trance-like but aggressive atmosphere. The production is less polished than their later work, favoring a raw, live-in-the-room feel that emphasizes the physical strain of the performance.
