Always Never the Same

Released in 1998, 'Always Never the Same' represents a unique chapter in the Kansas discography, functioning as a hybrid of a 'greatest hits' re-recording and a new studio effort. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra, the project was spearheaded by conductor Larry Baird. While the band had always utilized symphonic elements - most notably through Robby Steinhardt's violin - this album fully integrated a 70-piece orchestra into their sound. The tracklist features reimagined versions of classics like 'Song for America' and 'Cheyenne Anthem,' alongside new compositions like 'In Your Eyes' and 'The Sky Is Falling.' Notably, it includes the band's first cover song in decades, a haunting rendition of The Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby.' The album was well-received by fans for its high production values and the tasteful integration of the LSO, which avoided the 'rock band with strings' cliché by making the orchestra a primary melodic driver.
