A Century Ends

Released in 1993, A Century Ends serves as the foundational document of David Gray's career, though it sounds remarkably different from the folktronica style that would later define him on White Ladder. Produced by Dave Anderson and recorded by Jim Abbiss, the album is a masterclass in early-90s acoustic folk-rock. It features a full band - including Neil MacColl on guitar and mandolin - but the focus remains squarely on Gray’s distinctive, gravelly tenor. Critics at the time, including Trouser Press, noted the obvious parallels to Van Morrison, specifically in the way Gray balances sensitivity with a raw, vital energy. The album failed to find a massive audience upon its initial release, leading to Gray being dropped by multiple labels before his eventual independent breakthrough. However, following the success of White Ladder, the record was re-released in 2001, allowing fans to discover its more traditional, urgent folk roots. It remains a favorite among purists for its lyrical depth and unpolished emotional honesty.
